Hubs are circuses

There is a lot of noise on using schools as community hubs as a way of avoiding closings.

This could be a great idea except for that there is no interest by any government in funding this.

In fact the school funding formula directly discourages this. It funds schools with over 80% capacity at 100%. In other words, if your school is smaller, you suffer economically.

So, as far as it stands now there is a lot of positive press from a lot of organizations including the Board and the Premier but there is no money either promised or in the bank.

So do not hold your breath.

The only positive note here is the all day kindergarten that was recently announced. There is lots of money behind this and for small schools this will increase their enrollment.

Of course for full schools, they may have to kick out the day care or other community programs or even add portables because, as far as I understand it, there are no capital dollars behind it.

The community hub school so far is more circus than bread.

Enjoy the show.
