02 Why are we here

Thanks for looking in.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB)  -Here is the report- (Why can I not find this on the board’s site now?) and the Toronto Catholic  District School Board (TCDSB) have announced that they intend to close many schools and sell the land to developers. See if your school is on the list here or you could read my fantasy here.

What I believe*

  • Both boards are doing this in response to over 10 years of underfunding from the province.
  • We must keep as many local community based schools open as vital parts of city.
  • We must keep public assets, like school lands, in the public sector because there will be a need for more school places as the population fluctuates -we will never be able to afford to buy this land back – and because communities need schools for other social functions.
  • We must fight this in the ARC meetings, by organizing our own community meetings, by demonstrating in the street, by contacting the press, by holding trustees and MPPs accountable to the public sector and the present and future needs of this city.

The TDSB could close over 120 schools in the city in the next few years including 10 high schools.

The TCDSB has 35 schools under review in 10 ARCs with 12 schools suggested for possible closure.

So lets see if this blog can help keep some or perhaps all the schools in Toronto open.

  1. Hello ALL. I think we are failing miserably in our quest to keep small community schools open. The same will happen with high schools. I do not feel people are actively engaged in the problem enough to let others and trustees know they are dissatified with the ARC process. Everyone is busy but when schools are closing for no good reason, we the community must set priorities for our time and committment and stop school closures.

    • I feel th same up to now but interest is picking up. I think the Board is trying to bulldoze 12 closings this year because it expects the opposition to grow slowly. We need to keep building and get what gains we can this year. Next year we build on this.
